I recently heard of the term “Cuddle Cot” or “Cooling Cot” used to hold a deceased infant after death; therefore, allotting the family more time to spend with their child. This also aligned with “Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day” in October. I share this with you to keep you informed of the services available to grieving individuals.
As always, helping you shine bright for those who need you the most.
I want to emphasize the fact that we do NOT know when or for whom this information will be needed as you continue to support clients or others. No matter how uncomfortable this topic is to talk about, I feel it is important to supporting those who grieve in anyway we can.
INFORMATION IS POWERFUL and from an informed position we can all make better decision and understand those that others make without judgement.
I have provided a few points here and encourage you to seek more info on your own:
- This device in a sense refrigerates the body as it lays in the open cot
- Enables the body to deteriorate at a slower rate
- Allows a gift of time for the family to spend with the deceased infant (I read articles mentioning 3, 8 and 16 days to spend time with the infant.)
- Allows for more time to say goodbye to the infant
- Allows for more time to take pictures with the deceased infant
- Allows for more time to hold the child as this may be the only time they hold or have a child of their own to hold
- Some people in society do not agree with having the child around longer after death and feel this is morbid
- Some people believe taking pictures of the deceased child is morbid and wonder who would do this.
- Some people wish they had this opportunity when their infant had dies and support this option
- Not all parents or families would want to avail themselves of this opportunity
We can all be of service to others as we journey through our lives with times of hope and despair.
